FIDM Art of the Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibit Review

Today I attended FIDM Art of the Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibit, if you remember I posted about this a few days ago. The exhibit was wonderful to say in the lease bit. Upon entering the gallery I met Nick Verreos (Project Runway season 2) for like the 5th time in the past 3 years, granted he is a teacher on the campus. I thought I was pretty fun that we’re on a first name basis already and we don’t really know each other.

So entering the exhibit I was greeted by a dress from last years exhibit, which was Colleen Atwoods White Queen dress from Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland. Walking to the front show room I seen a interview going on with Mark Bridges, who is the Oscar Nominated costume designer for The Artist, more on that later. I was told to be quiet….the taping noise for my shoes didn’t seem to agree with that rule. Ok back to the story, the costumes used for the artist were stunning as they should be, anything from a period films usually is. Next to it was the J. Edgar exhibit a lot of wool and some furs used on the coat lapels.

Walking along towards the middle show room, I seen the wonderfully done costumes used in Water for Elephants. I’m obsessed with the circus as some of you may know, so I was thrilled to see these. The hand craftsmanship used to show that era, the beading used on Reese Witherspoon’s show outfit (I’m a sucker for detailed and hand beading) it was just breath taking. I was surprised to see how small the the outfit was, Reese is a pretty tiny girl. After that exhibit I seen the outfits used in The Help, my favorite piece was Celia Foote’s Christmas fundraiser dress worn by Jessica Chastain. It was a fuchsia pink floral embossed rhinestone studded dress, when I had seen the film I honestly thought sequins were used. Next to it were the two dresses used by Bryce Dallas Howard a.k.a Hilly in the film, One was the pleated floral dress use in the promotional poster and the other was a ever green pleated number use for the Christmas Fundraiser.

Moving towards the back I seen The Captain America and Thor costumes which were pretty simple. Following those two were the costumes used for W.E. which is the film Madonna directed. Once again a beautiful hand beaded cream colored dress as well as a blue pinstriped dress and steel Blue evening gown. The costumes from the film My Week With Marilyn were rich in layers and one outfit resembled Prince Charming suit from Cinderella. Lastly the exhibit ended with a piece from Real Steel, which was a sexy little studded body suit with a armor shell making the actress look like a cyborg. Costume from Immortal by Eiko Ishoka, the collection had a lot of metal pieces and the color pallet consisted of a lot of gold, bronze and black.

I know Im going to end up see this exhibit like 20 more time before it ends. I suggest you try to catch it if you can, its totally worth it.
