So its raining which I feel is really odd by L.A. standards, seeing how we rarely ever get any rain especially in the spring time. Since the it has officially been spring for the past few weeks, I thought it be a good idea to catch up on my extraordinarily long reading list that I completely forgot about. Keeping with a somewhat spring theme I decided to start reading this 1929 copy of Felix Salten’s Bambi I own.
The book itself is fairly old, I’m a little scared to even touch it let alone open it. The pages have that old brownish look to them that makes you feel as if you even try to turn the page, it’ll disintegrate in your fingers. I braved opening the book, dreading the fact that I might end up with a pile of dust, to show you the neat illustration in it.
I was a little surprised when I had seen this at a thrift store, mainly because I had thought Bambi was just a made up story by Disney. But sure enough it hit me that no original Disney film is made up, theyre all based off stories. Don’t believe me check for yourself. I’m a little skeptic about reading this however for the fact that the film really annoyed me. I know films are never the same as the book, but lets be frank here the film it’s self was fairly boring. so here to hoping this is a good read.
I found this little gem in a antique shop while walking in down town today. As soon as I seen the title, I jumped on this book like a bear to honey.
It’s a guide to dress making, suiting, and stitching from the 1920’s. This is really great reference material to make 20’s fashion. It’s a little tattered up but the content inside is still in perfect condition.
Harvard student wearing Bermudas in Bermuda. Circa 1960
I adore these shorts, I came across a 1963 pattern to make them. Will post.
It took me all day to find this pattern in my things, but I told you I had a vintage bermuda shorts pattern.
Designed By Mary Ann DeWeese
Circa 1949
Swimwear is part of the California Design Exhibit At LACMA. I honestly wouldnt mind wearing a pair of those lobster swim trunks, they look freaken sweet.
This gold bikini was made and used as a movie promotion for MGM’s 1952 film “Million Dollar Mermaid”
I have a huge love for vintage attire, especially swimwear. This bikini is simply quite stunning and really does hit the inspiration wheel for me. Will there be some vintage inspired swimwear coming from me in the near future….I highly think so.
Great thrift store find: 1930’s copy of Mary Poppins
It’s been pretty cloudy here in L.A. So I though it would be the perfect time to start reading this copy of Mary Poppins I came across. Oh how I love the smell of vintage books. The cover is a tad bit faded the interior of the book is still in positively perfect condition, and is complete with full illustration.
When I had found a copy of this book I honestly thought it would be somewhat around the same story line as the the Disney film. I’ve only read a few pages so far, but from what I read I was pretty much right. There are a few minor differences like how Bert is a match-man not a chimney sweep, whom only appears in one chapter of the story, and how there are a pair of twin babies no one ever knew about. Lets not forget the about how there about 4 more books that follow this one. I really wonder how the rest of this book will turn out. I really hope its not a cliff hanger like most stories nowadays, that would be something.
